Bosnia and Herzegovina has no indigenous natural gas reserves, the principal source of natural gas for Bosnia and Herzegovina is only gas imports. At present, it is supplied from only one supply source and through one transmission route.
The utilization of natural gas started in Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1979. The main objectives of introducing natural gas were to supply the Alumina Factory at Zvornik with natural gas and to resolve a problem of air pollution in the city of Sarajevo.
Natural gas are delivered to B&H through the transmission system of the Russian Federation to the Ukrainian / Hungarian border take-over measuring station, then the gas is transported through the Hungarian gas transmission system to Kiskundorozma (Horgos) at the Hungarian / Yugoslav border and further through the transmission system of Yugoslavia, entering Bosnia and Herzegovina at Zvornik, where the gas metering station is installed for the needs of B&H.
The total length of the transmission system to Bosnia and Herzegovina amounts to about 640
km.
